I am inspiration itself.
I think it's less a comment on outsider culture and more a homage to the 80s teen films. Like all of Katy Perry's stuff, it gets real messy if you look at it too deep. In the videos leading up to this release it is made out that her character is 13/14? She does shots, vomits and according to the lyrics has a "menage a trois".
Sure, you can look at it as reinforcing cultural stereotypes - but that's what all 80s films did. I think it's best to enjoy it for what it is, a funny and colourful music video.
I wasn’t really being in earnest - I know it wasn’t actively malicious or anything.
But yeah, Katy Perry’s body of work is problematic as fuck and maybe it’s just that I’m raw that the woman who found success with a song as stupid as ‘I Kissed A Girl’ has now produced a music video which has the same essentialist way of looking at gender and sexuality (Which will probably make her millions.)
I don’t think that in the creation of something as saccharine and friendly and mainstream as this you can hide behind 80’s nostalgia as your only way of defending things that are problematic.
